Victoria Square was named in honour of Queen Victoria in 1901. The square had been called the catchy ‘Council House Square’ before this point. The statue was unveiled on January 10th 1901, twelve days before Queen Victoria’s death, and was created by Sir Thomas Brock, a sculptor from Worcester. The statue was originally made from marble but a bronze cast was made of it in 1951, which I think is beautiful. I’ve loved this statue since I was a child and I view it as much a landmark of home as I do the Rotunda or the Selfridges building.
