The Friday Photo – Birmingham Vaisakhi

Vaisakhi

I have been planning this for a while last Sunday we broke free form the usual Victorian and Edwardian era often featured here in the Friday photo. This weeks Friday photo was taken from one of my favorite places in Birmingham – Handsworth. The Birmingham Vaisakhi festival is one of the largest in the country this is the holiest day in the Sikh. It marks the ceremony in 1699 on the first day of the month of Vaiskh, when the tenth Guru, Sri Guru Gobind Singh Ji Maharaj created the order of the Khalsa. On this day, the Panj Pyare (the 5 beloved ones) came forward to offer their heads to their Guru Ji.

The photograph above was taken outside Guru  Nanak  Gurdwara on the Soho Rd, which was built in the 1970’s.
