This was Julie’s Friday Photo back in December, just as the demolition of the iconic building started, and now six months on, the library is nearly gone, a ghost of its former self, and split in half, literally. I took this photo just two days ago from the offices of Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery, where I sometimes work, and thought I’d post a photo of the building from a different perspective, one you don’t normally see. What strikes me about the library is the sheer amount of land it occupied. Central Library was a bit like Marmite- you either loved it or hated it, but I personally think the building was a little misunderstood. For me, I loved it, but understand that it was perhaps no longer fit for purpose in today’s ever changing Birmingham. I just hope that what replaces it, is just as iconic and the designers take a risk. There’s nothing wrong with Marmite after all….
