Friday Photo- St Chad’s Cathedral

You’d be forgiven for not recognising this week’s Friday Photo because its facade is masked in scaffolding. But for those of you who like Gothic-Revival architecture, it’s probably clear to see that a well-known cathedral is hiding behind the wood and scaffolding. St Chad’s Cathedral is the seat of the Catholic Church in Birmingham, but it is not just important from a faith perspective, but also incredibly significant in terms of its unique heritage. Built in 1841, it was the first Catholic cathedral built after the Reformation of the 16th Century, and designed by Pugin. If you’ve visited St Chad’s before you may have also seen the wonderfully vibrant stained-glass windows that adorn its walls, and many of these were also designed by Pugin. Currently, the building is undergoing restoration work and repairs to its roof, so I plan on sharing another photo of the Cathedral and the stained-glass windows later in the year, when the work is complete.
